Imagine a world where anything is possible.  You can do anything you set your mind to. Being the worlds fastest illegal street racer was yesterday.  Today you can be a foot soldier on the front lines of World War II or explore a vast medieval landscape full of dangerous dragons.  You can even fight along side well known characters like Mickey Mouse or Mario on a dangerous journey.

These great worlds exist, and they’re known as video games.

Video Games often get a very bad reputation, and wrongly so.  Studies show video games can cause bad grades and can be addictive, and they can certainly take up a lot of our time.  But the people that analyze these games are missing one thing: video games can teach us something valuable.  Avid video game player and Senior Leonardo Claudio says that without video games, he wouldn’t be who he is today.

Claudio has been playing video games since he was three years old.  His first game he ever played was F-zero, a racing game available on Nintendo consoles.  “…that was the first game I had ever played, also because it was a racing game, and well I love cars and racing just as much as I love video games, so that game essentially molded me into the young man I am today,” said Claudio.

But video games didn’t just spark Claudio’s interest in cars.  From the numerous games he’s played, especially Kingdom of Hearts (a game following our favorite childhood Disney characters on a perilous journey) Claudio has learned a lot of things about life.  “Video games taught me empathy, and forgiveness.  They even taught me about friendship and what it’s like to help others, no matter how the odds are stacked against me.  Simply, video games are an art, with takes into account aesthetics, emotions, and reactions of fear, adrenaline or awe,” said Claudio.

Claudio recommends video games for everyone of all ages.  His favorite gaming system is his Playstation 4, and his three favorite games to play are Kingdom Hearts, Bioshock, and the Last of Us. Video games are a fun escape from our everyday lives. They allow everyone who plays them an outlet, and a chance to relax. No matter what video game critics say, Claudio is living proof that video games can have a good influence on us as people.
