History teacher Regi Winer is starting a new Social Studies Honor Society for all juniors and seniors this year.

It has been the objective of Mrs. Winer to get this new honor society started.  For the past few years, she has been trying to begin the new society, and when it was finally approved, she was very thrilled.  “When they finally said we could begin the process I was very excited,” Mrs. Winer said.

The Winston Churchill chapter, named by senior Justin Homburg, chapter president, is looking to recognize the students who excel in History.  He is trying to create a higher standard with different activities than other societies.  “We want to emphasize the importance on understanding history, rather than just knowing facts,” Homburg said.

Leaders of this Society have a firm belief that knowledge without service is useless.  That is why this society is really focusing on serving others, especially by using history as a way to help benefit them and to prepare them for what the future might hold.

In order to be invited to join the honor society, juniors must have at least 2.5 credits in social studies classes with a minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA.  While this honor society won’t be as active as others, many meetings and at least one service project will be completed by the end of the year.  Leaders of the Winston Churchill chapter are looking to set a tone of excellence for future classes and leaders to build upon.

The purpose of this honor society is not just to give students another cord to wear at graduation.  “We really wanted to recognize students whose strongpoint is social studies,” Mrs. Winer said.

Students will be receiving invitations to join before Thanksgiving, with the induction ceremony joining the Math and Spanish Honor Societies at their induction ceremony in March.  This honor society will be joining the list of other prestigious societies including the Art Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and the Quill and Scroll Society.

“History is so important because it involves things that are happening around us today and things that are going to affect our future,” Homburg said.

I think it’s great that CCC is expanding it’s clubs and honors societies to give more students an opportunity to show their talents.
