Marauder Remix: Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day”
I woke up at four in the morning, deciding to sleep in for once. Usually, I get up at three thirty every morning. Tackling that stretch of road known as U.S. 19 outside of our school, that must be crossed to get to our school requires a certain a great deal of time.
But today felt different. My lunch was already packed, my Nissan Versa’s tank was full with gas, and I got 30 minutes of extra sleep. My breakfast was delicious, my dad was nice enough to save me the last Cinnabon. Hmm, 30 minutes of extra sleep, a fresh made lunch and a Cinnabon? Today was going to be a good day.
I pulled up to the light on Whitney Road by Tri-City Plaza. I’ve made the majority of the lights and having left at 4:30, have only driven for ten minutes, made great time. At this rate on a usual day I would’ve had to get up at 3:00 and have left by 3:30. Now for the real test, making the left turn. I had seen a few of my home boys driving past and had flashed a confident smile, but inside I was having an aneurism.
“Okay, you can do this just signal left, there you go. Now it’s green just go ahead and turn. Don’t worry about the fact that this is where 60% of all the accident’s on this road happen, and all the drivers are hyper as kids after a candy binge. It’s fine.”
In twenty short seconds, I made the turn and now was on the heart of the road.
Now I traded one heart attack for another remembering how I had to merge with these reckless drivers. I signaled and merged, and surprisingly, there were no other cars. I was able to finish the rest of my journey in peace. I arrived at school at 5 in the morning–my best time ever, just beating Ms. Noyes. It was just then when it hit me, there was no wreck, no traffic jam, nothing. Well, well, one day without anything going wrong. As Ice Cube Said back in ‘93 today was a good day.

I loved the way this was written. The picture drew me in and temped me to read. After the first line, I was hooked. It was easy to relate to, because all of us have to experience in some way the same death trap known as US-19 hoping to have a good day.

It’s rare to have a good day on US 19. Lately its been seeming like I have to leave earlier and earlier to get at school at the same time.

I thought the title of this article was really interesting. The title really grabbed my attention from
the beginning, and the article was just as fabulous.
