Frantically applying last minute touches, reviewing their answers to the judges’ perplex questions and rehearsing their talent portion, these determined children prepare to enter the most rigorous competition- the beauty pageant.

Registered by their persistent parents, these daughters endure the demanding realm of pageants, broadcasted by TLC’s Toddlers & Tiaras on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m., in hopes of winning prestigious titles, money or valuable rewards.

Rising in popularity, Toddlers & Tiaras has captivated its average audience of one million viewers through the remarkable lives of various children per episode.  With their mother’s aid, these competitors battle each other with their secret weapons of false eyelashes, sparking white dentures and spray tans.

Former pageant participant, senior Rachel Sticco has experienced the competition’s intense atmosphere.  Prepared with her mother’s questions, her makeup, hair, and wardrobe were precisely applied, much like the routine of the toddlers’.  The rushed, fast paced environment leaves each competitor deliberately going with the flow, hoping to please the judges.

“In skating, the confidence and performance help from pageants and the ability to always be smiling. It gives an overall confidence no matter what anyone says,” Sticco said.

Competing for four years, she won 1st runner up for Miss Teen Tampa Bay.  Although Sticco only began in the fifth grade, she still reminisces about hanging out with the other competitors, discussing dresses, and cheering each other on, an aspect rarely shown on Toddlers & Tiaras.

Faithful viewers, Sticco and junior Asije Whaley, watch the renowned show due to its hilarity from the parent’s absurdity. In addition, the two students both admire the legendary six year old Eden Wood.

“Eden Wood is fantastic and a boss,” Whaley said.

Although Toddlers & Tiaras appears to be any other reality show, Sticco’s experience has benefited her 11 years of skating and improved her acting.  The current infatuation of reality shows varying from Dance Moms, American Idol, and America’s Next Top Model intrigue its viewers from its believable intensity, staged or not.

Personally I do not like the show , theses children are extremly spoiled an the parents do not realize how this is going to affect thier child in the long run. Some turn out just find others become very bratty an spoiled. The parents do not realize this because they are so focused on thier child winning and being number one

I personally think this show is ridiculous because those little girls should not be wearing that much make up or hairspray. When I was their age I could only wear makeup on holloween. Well written article though.

I’ve never seen this show and I dont think I ever will because I think its weird to dress little kids up like older women and have them wear makeup and fancy dresses
